Updated for 2024
It has been a long-time tradition in America to cut your own perfect Christmas tree rather than buy artificial ones, and Maryland offers a ton of options. Choosing a real Christmas tree yourself, whether it be fir or spruce, is a fun activity to get you and your family in the holiday season spirit.
As we get closer to Thanksgiving, the agreed-upon date when trees are displayed, we are showing you Christmas tree farms in Maryland where you can warm up with hot cocoa, browse the gift shop, and find the tree of your dreams.

From Baltimore to Frederick, the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and beyond, we have you covered no matter how far you want to drive for your D.C. day trip. Just get out and grab that tree!
Many Maryland Christmas tree farms only accept cash or check; not all take credit card payments.
Things to Know Before You Cut a Christmas tree
Proper planning helps avoid any mishaps on your Maryland Christmas Tree cutting adventure. Do your research and try to answer a few key questions (if you can) before you leave:
- When do they open? Don’t show up with the Christmas tree farm is closed!
- How far is it from your home? Do you want to drive two hours with a tree on the roof of your car or only 20 minutes?
- Is food allowed? Because some tree farms in Maryland offer food on-site to help finance the farm, you may not be able to bring a picnic lunch with you.
- Do they have tools? Many farms supply saws, twine, and balers, but some do not. Don’t drive all the way out to the Christmas tree farm and not have a way to cut down your tree.
- Are restrooms on site? Many farms do not have public restrooms, so plan accordingly… and know where to go close by as an alternative.
- Are pets allowed? Many farms do not allow pets to protect the crops. Respect the rules of the house and leave Fido at home.
- Are other activities available? If you are looking for sleigh rides, Santa visits, a farmers market, and Christmas shop, find out ahead of time what the property offers. We always look for hot cocoa and cider.
Taking the whole family to a Christmas tree farm is an exciting holiday tradition. Whether you’re hunting for real trees or hoping to find the perfect Christmas tree, careful preparation ensures everyone has a memorable experience.

What Type of Christmas Tree Do You Need?
- Balsam Fir: With a balsam fir, the needles are dark green and about ¾ to 1½ inches in length. It should retain a lovely fragrance throughout the Christmas season.
- Blue Spruce: Bluish grey in color with needles 1 to 1-1/2 inches long, a symmetrical tree that retains its needles well is what a blue spruce is known for.
- Concolor Fir: Blue-green needles are ½ to 1-1/2 inch long, nice shape, and have a good aroma.
- Douglas Fir: Good fragrance with soft blue to dark green in color, 1 to 1-1/2 inch needles that give off a sweet scent when crushed.
- Fraser Fir: The Fraser fir features excellent needle-retention, are dark blue-green in color with branches that turn slightly upwards (and hold up well to ornaments). They also have a pleasant scent that isn’t overpowering.
- Leyland Cypress: Leyland cypress is dark green-gray with very little aroma. It is popular in the Southeast and with those allergic to sap since this tree is neither pin nor fir. It also doesn’t produce sap.
- Norway Spruce: Needles ½ to ¾ inch in length, green to bluish-green needles.
- Noble Fir: Stiff branches make it a good tree for heavy ornaments. It also makes excellent greenery for wreaths and garlands.
- Silver Fir: Dark Green needles ½ to 1 inch in length. Similar to Fraser fir with excellent needle retention.
- Scotch Pine: One of the best needle retentions you can get on a Christmas tree. It’s bright green with needles about 1 inch long. These are perfect to buy in a pot and keep in your home or garden all year long.
- White Pine: The largest pine in the U.S., the white pine has soft, flexible needles and is bluish-green in color. Needles are 2½ – 5 inches long. Not much of a smell.
- Virginia Pine: A small to medium size tree with stout and woody branches.

How to Pick the Best Christmas Tree
- Measure the ceiling height in the room where the tree will be displayed. You don’t want to get a tree that is too tall or wide, so make sure you also know the width of the room where you plan to place the perfect tree.
- Do you have a lot of heavy ornaments? Make sure you get a Christmas tree with sturdy branches to support your decorations and keep your holiday season stress-free.
- Are you putting the tree in your car or on top of your car? If inside, buy a tarp to save your car interior from sap.
